Having a Lovely Time Writing

A Wish Fulfilled – an Interview with Michael Alexander

Don’t you just love it when you discover a new author to read and that’s exactly what happened to me! I was absolutely delighted when Children’s author Michael Alexander added me as a friend on Facebook and then when I clicked on his website, I was literally blown away by his Until Wishes are Fulfilled series and I am sure you will be too!

Definitely, a must read for children of all ages!

Author Profile: Michael Alexander

Name: Michael Alexander
Age: 42 (but if you take my inner age and mix it with my ‘real’ age, I am actually somewhere in my mid twentys!)
Job: Dad, writer, engineer (this one is to pay the bills!)
Books: Adventures in Cuckoos Hollow – a story written for my 5 children, who are all animal characters in it.

The Midnight Mirror

1) What sort of things do you like to write about?

I love writing about magical things, where the unbelievable comes true, and my characters’ lives are transformed.
In my ‘Until Wishes are Fulfilled’ books, children who are having a tough time suddenly find themselves in possession of a magician’s set that really works. They are able to cast spells that make them fly, become invisible, meet ghosts, travel through time, but the set is only theirs until their deepest wish is fulfilled, the one that will bring back the happiness into their lives.

2) How do you get your ideas?

Most of my ideas strike me out of the blue. I will be doing something normal, such as working or driving, and an idea will pop into my brain like a bubble has drifted up into my head and popped. The trouble is, if I don’t write it down quickly, it carried on its journey out through my ears and disappears again!
I also draw a lot of ideas from the characteristics of the people I meet every day (though I won’t mention any names in case they get a little cross with me!)

3) What things do you like to read?

I read lots of different things, from dark Gothic tales like The Historian and The Shadow of the Wind, to the wonderfully charming and funny books by Terry Pratchett.
And of course, I read lots of children’s and young adult’s books too, probably more than ‘grown up’ books, particularly books like Neil Gaiman and again Terry Pratchett. Recently I have beenhunting down some of the books I read as a child (not once, but hundreds of times!), and have enjoyed Susan Cooper’s Dark is Rising series, and Alan Garners wonderful The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath.
In fact I have a backlog of at least 50 books, waiting to be read, including The Swallows and Amazons books from my childhood!

4) Of all the things you have written what has been your favourite?

Although I’m very happy with the way The Midnight Mirror is going, I think my favourite will always be Adventures in Cuckoos Hollow, not just because it was the first story I wrote, but because it has my children in it!

5) Where can we read your work?

My Until Wishes are Fulfilled books are available from my website, http://www.mybooks.org.uk and also by order from bookshops and on-line stores.
I hope very much to have Until Wishes are Fulfilled 3 out later this year.

And finally:

I have always loved reading, I never stopped as a child and when I left junior school I had a reading age of +48 months. I also told my mum that I would be a writer one day, although I forgot about this until I started writing and she reminded me!
Today I write and read whenever I get the chance, although I love spending time with my 5 children. I also love to be outside, in the middle of nowhere, and taking photographs of the world around me.

I really can’t wait to read Until Wishes are Fulfilled 3 The Circle of Magic – because it has a dragon in it!

Thanks for the interview Michael.
